16th cent. borrowing from Ancient Greek παραβολή (parabolé) "comparison;" "parable." From πᾰρᾰ́ (pará) "beside" and βάλλειν (bállein) "to throw," combined for the sense of placing two things side-by-side for the purpose of comparison.
